Sexy Glee Episode Draws Fire for Gary Glitter Track

In the most recent episode of ‘Glee’ entitled “Sexy”, the characters learn the basics of sex education, most especially from McKinley High’s resident sub teacher Holly Holiday, portrayed by Gwyneth Paltrow.

Now the show is under fire due to a scene depicting Paltrow’s character singing and dancing to the tune of “Do You Want to Touch Me?”, originally popularized by Gary Glitter in 1973, as it triggered heavy criticism from Kidscape, a children’s charity group.

Glitter is a convicted sex criminal who was imprisoned in Vietnam for three years. With his 1973 hit being covered by the show and is also included in the show’s multi-volume compilations, the singer is now slated to receive royalties for song rights. But apart from this, the charity’s main objection is that the scene tended to glorify the singer and the song’s lyrics in a high school classroom setting.

“It is regrettable that the producers did not consider the implication of using such a track in the context of a sex education class. The fact that this song is linked to Gary Glitter, and the words themselves, make it wholly inappropriate,” said Kidscape director Claude Knights, to an interview with the Daily Star. As a result, the specific scene/song number might find itself in the cutting room floor as British TV execs airing the show are obviously pressured with the issue.

In the show’s defense, a female rendition of the song by Joan Jett was released in 1982, and it was this version that the show covered, at least that’s what they’re saying.
