After a lackluster second season that earned mostly mixed reviews for its lack of focus, despite its relevant and somewhat controversial twists, ‘Glee’ creator Ryan Murphy brings in six new creative geniuses to the writers’ room in the hopes of creating a better, more refreshing and more exciting third season for the critically acclaimed show. They all start working this Monday.
“Last year you had the baby story line that everyone could follow and this year we didn’t do that,” Murphy tells The Hollywood Reporter. “Next year we’re going to be doing that more. What I have learned from this season is I think people want story arcs.”
The new additions to the creative team will not only help the existing creative heads – Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan – spice and clean up the series’ storylines, especially this season where more attention will be given to the freshman characters. With more manpower comes a more efficient division of labor, which was one of the show’s major hurdles last season, with the three creative heads who are also doubling as executive producers, handling all the writing workload for all 22 episodes, plus some directorial duties as well for both Murphy and Falchuk.
The incoming six new writers are clearly the best in the show’s genre, which is a mix of comedy, drama and music, as reflected through their credentials:
Allison Adler will join the three as the show’s new co-executive producer. She used to write for ‘Chuck’ and ‘No Ordinary Family’.
Marti Noxon got her first big writing break from ‘Angel’ and ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’. After working for ‘Mad Men’, ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and its spin-off ‘Private Practice’, she’s coming to ‘Glee’ as a consulting producer.
Michael Hitchcock of the ‘MADtv’ writers’ team is no stranger to ‘Glee’ since he has appeared in a couple of episodes, plus eleven episodes of ‘United States of Tara’. He’s back in ‘Glee’ not as an actor though, but as a consulting producer as well.
Fresh from the successful Broadway premiere of ‘Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark’, where he served as the musical’s playwright, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, whose TV credits include the critically acclaimed HBO original ‘Big Love’, will be joining the team as a co-producer.
Matt Hodgson and Ross Maxwell will be the latest additions to the show’s team of staff writers. Hodgson has already served as a script coordinator for ‘Glee’ and has worked closely with Murphy on the set of ‘Eat, Pray, Love’. Maxwell, on the other hand, was last seen on screen in the film, ‘Running in Traffic’.
While writing for season three of ‘Glee’ begins next week, principal photography, care of 20th Television, will commence in August. The show will be back on air in September via FOX.
