Glee Takes on Michael Jackson for Super Bowl Episode

Posted by Janice Bryant On November - 18 - 2010

Gleeks, you were probably thinking Gwyneth Paltrow singing Cee-Lo was really big news.

Now you are going to kneeling down to thank Grilled Cheesus when you hear the latest news. A “Glee” source has confirmed that “Glee” will be performing the iconic Michael Jackson song “Thriller” on the episode after the Super Bowl. However, there will be a twist.

The classic Jackson song will be performed mashed-up together will another song that hasn’t been chosen yet.

This super size episode, which according to the source says it be “Glee’s” most expensive ever and most likely one of the costliest episodes ever in television history, will also be featuring covers of songs by Katy Perry, Lady Antebellum and Black Eyed Peas.

I’m worn out already and there’s more.

In the episode “Thriller” will be featured. However the episode won’t be a tribute to Michael Jackson or a Bruce Springsteen tribute, as had been suggested by rumors.

The “Glee” source says the only pop star that was seriously considered for their episode after the Super Bowl was Elton John. A tribute John episode can be expected as part of the back nine episodes of “Glee.”

The episode after the Super Bowl instead will continue the night’s sports theme. The focus will be on their local football championship as well as the cheerleading regionals of Sue Sylvester. The mash-up “Thriller” performance will play during the onscreen football game’s halftime show.

It will basically be a “Glee” classic episode, just better and bigger. Gleeks can also look forward to appearances from fan favorites from season two: Coach Beiste (played by Dot-Marie Jones) and Blaine (played by Darren Criss).

The episode will be co-sponsored by General Motors, so commercial interruptions will likely be limited.

Will Darren Criss Become ‘Glee’ Regular?

Posted by Janice Bryant On November - 11 - 2010

Darren Criss fits in so well that the bosses of “Glee” are considering promoting him. Darren plays a gay character on “Glee. His debut in the episode on November 9 impressed many. Reportedly, he now is in talks for becoming a regular on the hit show.

Blaine, the character played by Criss, initially was set to be a recurring character for this season. Ryan Murphy, creator of “Glee,” wanted Kurt (played by Chris Colfer) to have a love interest to give the role justice. The promotion will likely kick off “Glee’s” third season, which FOX has confirmed.

It would be the first big television role for Criss. He last played Josh Burton on “Eastwick,” which is now dead, and had a guest role on “Criminal Minds.” Criss gained notoriety after starring in “A Very Potter Musical,” a viral hit on YouTube.

Glee Battles Ratings Dip with Gwyneth Paltrow, Susan Boyle, Charice

Posted by Janice Bryant On November - 10 - 2010

With all the hype around last night’s “Glee” episode, it was surprising that the show actually dipped in the ratings. Although earning only a 4.5 rating for the 18-49 demographic, “Glee” still did manage to take the 8:00 pm time slot’s top position. The Emmy nominee show averaged 10.83 million viewers.

However, will “Glee” be able to recover from last night’s 8% dip? The creators of the show have several tricks up their sleeve to help bring huge ratings in for the upcoming weeks.

Next week, Gwyneth Paltrow is making an appearance as Holly Holiday. Paltrow will be playing a substitute teacher who is filling in for a sick Will Scheuster. The Oscar award winning actress will be sings and dancing throughout this season’s seventh episode.

Another boost in the ratings could occur when singer Charice Pempengco returns. The 18 year old made her “Glee” debut during the season premiere. She sang “Listen” and “Telephone” and was highly successful on Billboard’s music charts. “Glee” fans have been waiting anxiously for Sunshine Corazon, her character, to return. Some fans have even said they would be boycotting “Glee” until Charice returns.

Susan Boyle is another big name that could bring “Glee” a new set o fans. The contestant from “Britain’s Got Talent” reportedly will be making an appearance in December for “Glee’s” Christmas episode.

Puck Releases Solo Album

Posted by Janice Bryant On November - 9 - 2010

Gleeks can rest easy. Puck, the Mark Salling character on “Glee,” has not been written off. Salling, in fact, has been doing his own writing. He will return to the ensemble musical series cast on FOX with his new solo album out on store shelves.

Before the Dallas native appeared on “Glee,” Salling performed under the stage name “Jericho.” He released an album with the title “Smoke Signals. On October 25 “Pipe Dreams,” his second album, was released.

“Pipe Dreams” was released by Salling on Pipe Dream Records, his very own record label. He also produced and wrote all of the album’s tracks. The set was in the making for seven years, resulting in an eclectic mixture of indie rock along with folk and country inspired beat.

However, “Glee” fans be forewarned. The sound from Salling is in complete contrast to the material that his “Glee” character sings. “Higher Power,” the first single from Salling, is a jazz-rock mellow track setting the entire album’s tone. On “Illusions,” Salling raps about trying to make sense of what the media presents. On “Willing and Wonderful” he delivers a sound of soft rock reminiscent of R.E.M.

Most of the”Pipe Dreams” tracks sound too familiar. His lyrics are very thoughtful, which after seven years they should be, however the album’s direction is scattered. The set also is lacking in terms of a mainstream, radio-friendly appeal. Many “Glee” fans could end up being disappointed.

However, fans can still take solace with the knowledge that “Pipe Dreams” proves Salling isn’t giving into the fame that he has garnered for his Noah Puckerman role on “Glee.” The popularity of Salling won’t soar because of this album, however his love for songwriting and music shines through very clear. It provides easy listening for fans of alternative rock of the 1990s.
