Show Me the Money Say Glee Actors on Soundtrack Sales

Posted by Janice Bryant On August - 30 - 2010

The “Glee” stars are reported to be bitter about their limited earnings from royalties from the sales of their chart topping soundtrack release, “Glee: The Music – Journey to the Regionals” which was released last year under Sony Music.

After moving millions of copies worldwide amounting to millions of dollars, the cast of the highly acclaimed and top rated Fox TV series particularly Cory Monteith who plays school jock “Finn” and Mark Salling who plays kid-tossing bad boy “Puck” say they were receiving less than what they ought to get from the album sales.

In a radio interview in Washington, DC, Monteith was quoted in saying “I got 400 bucks from it going no.1”, whether that was an exaggeration or not, it only implies that the actor was indeed paid less than what he was supposed to receive, and so did the rest of the cast, as well.

As a result, Mark Salling and Matthew Morrison, both of whom are now busy prepping for their forthcoming solo efforts, are strongly considering signing with other music labels, while the entire cast has brought the matter to the attention of the show’s creator, Ryan Murphy.

A New York Post insider said that the cast members are “furious” for being “misled by Sony”. The insider also added, “Sony should have known better – they kept their hands on money that could have been paid to the cast…but by upsetting the biggest talent on TV, the label is cutting its nose off to spite its face. It is myopic, short-term thinking on their part.”

As of press time, Sony Music and Fox have not released an official statement.

Kings of Leon Turn Down a Date with Glee

Posted by Janice Bryant On August - 19 - 2010

There’s a reason why the saying “You Can’t Please Everybody” continues to hold true, because apparently, Grammy Award winning rock band Kings of Leon isn’t just that impressed with “Glee” or any TV show or movie for that matter.

With the likes of Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Madonna – from which “Glee” based an entire episode paying homage to her music, her fashion and her message of women empowerment – and even ex-Beatle Sir Paul McCartney lending their song sheets to be featured by the critically acclaimed top rating show, Kings of Leon, best remembered for their songs like “Use Somebody” and “Sex on Fire”, isn’t amused enough to join the bandwagon.

The band’s vocalist, Caleb Followill, recalls that “Glee” and even the now defunct “Ugly Betty” TV series tried to acquire the license to use his band’s songs for both shows. Followill also remembers studio execs from a certain movie who were also trying to do same, the movie execs would even go as far as having the star of the movie talk to Followill which emitted this response from the band front man, “Man, don’t even waste your energy”.

Jane Lynch Set to Host Saturday Night Live

Posted by Janice Bryant On August - 11 - 2010

While Jane Lynch’s ‘Glee’ alter ego makes the lives of McKinley High students a living hell, the Emmy nominee will bring nothing but laughter – and maybe a little hell too just for kicks – when she hosts an episode of “Saturday Night Live” next fall.

The news came from “Glee” creator and “Eat Pray Love” director Ryan Murphy who told The Hollywood Reporter during the premiere of his new Julia Roberts flick in NYC, how Lynch’s SNL gig came about. “Saturday Night Live called to say, ‘Would you give us Jane for a week in October?’ We just don’t do that, but for Lorne Michaels, I said yes.”

He then immediately sent this text message to Jane Lynch: “Lady, you’re doing Saturday Night Live”, who replied back with “What are you talking about?”

Despite the report, SNL reps have denied the rumor or have named any future guests for the sketch show. “We haven’t confirmed any hosts or musical guests yet”, was the statement they sent MTV News through an email. Playing coy are we?

Anyway, Lynch has also been coy about what ‘Glee’ fans can expect from the show, particularly from the ruthless “Sue Sylvester”, this season. “I haven’t even seen a script and I don’t have any idea!” is what she told MTV News in July. One thing’s for sure though, Sue Sylvester will continue to demean McKinley High’s New Directions with her under-the-table tactics and snide comments.

‘Glee’ Might Hit Broadway, Details to be Confirmed

Posted by Janice Bryant On August - 6 - 2010

Although no one would confirm nor deny the rumors of a “Glee” Broadway musical, the speculation would simply not die down.

That is because there is sound basis for the rumor. According to The New York Times, Ryan Murphy’s $24 million contract with 20th Century Fox who airs “Glee” on Tuesday nights, entitles the show creator to royalties springing from the show’s tour ticket sales, merchandise earnings and record sales from the show’s OST releases, which on the average manages to pull off at least four OST releases per season.

In addition and more importantly, Murphy’s four-year contract with Fox entitles him to bring the TV show about talented high school underdogs to Broadway if he wishes to do so. Murphy secured the deal with the giant TV network recently which is probably how the rumors have started.

Whereas “Glee” is rumored to make a transition from the small screen to the Great White Way, “Wicked” has been reportedly to do somewhat the opposite with Sony Pictures mainly responsible for the Broadway musical’s transition to the big screen. The film outfit has been eyeing Murphy to direct the movie adaptation of the award winning and commercially successful Broadway musical. “I’ll do anything Ryan wants”, says Sony Pictures chairwoman Amy Pascal in a released statement.

While both projects needed to be sorted out, Murphy is back on the set of “Glee” to film new episodes for the show’s second season which is set to return on September 21. The show features some of Broadway’s major talents like Matthew Morrison (Hairspray, South Pacific) who plays the ever optimistic glee club coach “Will Schuester” and Lea Michele (Spring Awakening) who plays over-confident yet very talented glee club captain “Rachel Berry”. Other stars include Emmy nominee Jane Lynch as the evil cheerleading coach “Sue Sylvester”, newcomers Cory Monteith, Amber Riley, Kevin McHale, Chris Colfer, Diana Agron, Mark Salling and Jenna Ushkowitz who like Michele, also appeared in Broadway’s “Spring Awakening”.

In the second season of the multi-awarded and highly successful Fox hit TV musical “Glee”, expect a more in-depth glimpse at the intriguing life of ‘Cheerios’ coach Sue Sylvester as Sue’s mom a.k.a “Mama Sylvester” will be gracing the series through multi-talented veteran actress Carol Burnett.

A seasoned actress whose acting skills were honed by juggling comedy and drama on stage, in the small screen and the big screen, Burnett was bewitched by the magic and sizzle of show business since her childhood, especially during the industry’s golden age – the ‘30s, ‘40s, ‘50s and ‘60s – which led her to embark on a fruitful entertainment career from coast to coast.

A Texan native, Burnett traveled to Hollywood with her grandmother who raised her since Carol’s parents had a history of alcoholism. After graduating from UCLA with a degree in theater, she broke into mainstream entertainment through The Gary Moore Show where she harnessed her comedic skills. In 1959, she made her stage debut in the comedic fantasy musical “Once upon a Mattress” in Broadway’s Neil Simon Theatre (formerly known as the Alvin Theatre).

Her biggest and by far, most successful and most remembered TV project was the CBS variety program “The Carol Burnett Show” which ran for 12 years starting in 1967. The show had a great mixture of slapstick sketches and song numbers which left a good lasting impression in television history, so good it continued to rake in good figures with its DVD sales.

After five decades in the biz, she has more than a handful of acclaims to her name, including five Golden Globe trophies, an Ace Award for her role in “Between Friends” in which Hollywood living legend Elizabeth Taylor was also a star, a Peabody Award for her work in the ABC made-for-TV movie “Friendly Fire”, numerous People’s Choice Awards, the Kennedy Center Honors in 2003 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2005 which is the highest award given to an American civilian for his/her significant contributions to world peace and global culture.

Carol Burnett is expected to appear in the season 2 of “Glee”, most probably as a recurring role, either in October or November. She will play Sue Sylvester’s mother which Sue described in first season’s “Power of Madonna” episode as a Nazi-hunter, which is why Sue and her sister had to fend for themselves as they were growing up.

New “Glee” episodes will air on Fox starting on September 21, Tuesday.

Ryan Murphy: “I’m writing a new show for Kristin Chenoweth”

Posted by Janice Bryant On August - 3 - 2010

After Kristin Chenoweth’s two-season stint with the now defunct ABC drama “Pushing Daisies” and her Emmy-nominated recurring appearance in “Glee” as frustrated theater actress “April Rhodes” who then became an alcoholic, “Glee” creator Ryan Murphy is planning to write a new series for the Tony Award winning actress.

In a brief statement given by Murphy to entertainment website Zap2It, he said that someone so talented such as Chenoweth deserves her own show. “…I’m writing a half hour musical comedy specifically for Kristin because if you can sing like that, I want her to be the star of her own show where she sings… Kristin is so funny. I want it to be adult”, Murphy added. And despite the show’s musical-laden theme, it will not be a spin-off of “Glee”.

Chenoweth, one of Broadway’s biggest exports to the TV and film industry, is best remembered on stage as the original Glinda in the highly regarded musical “Wicked” which earned her a Tony Award nomination. She had previously bagged the same honor for her work in “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown” five years earlier.

Her NBC show “Kristin”, marked her first major project as she made the transition from theater to the small screen, but she is best remembered by boob tube fans for her role in the critically acclaimed political drama “The West Wing” and her Emmy-winning performance in “Pushing Daisies”, which was canceled only after two seasons despite rave reviews. The new David E. Kelley drama “Legally Mad” will feature Chenoweth as one of the lead characters. Its airing date is yet to be announced though.

At present, Chenoweth is back on Broadway alongside “Will & Grace” star Sean Hayes for the musical “Promises, Promises”. No word yet if the Broadway actress will be reprising her role as “April Rhodes” on the season 2 of “Glee”, nor any more details on Ryan Murphy’s show plans for Chenoweth other than the ones he disclosed with Zap2It.
