Glee’s Matthew Morrison Scores a Record Deal

Posted by Janice Bryant On January - 30 - 2010

This fall fans of Glee will be having something else to sing about when Matthew Morrison releases an album.

The exact type of music that Morrison is planning to record is still not known yet. However, he has signed a recording deal with Mercury Records. A release date for the album is set for fall 2010.

Maybe Morrison will need to clear off some space on his mantle for Grammys in addition to his Golden Globes. That might be a stretch, however you never know. Morrison has been nominated as Outstanding Lead Actor for a TV Musical/Comedy for his Glee work, and many are predicting he will win.

Previously Morrison flexed his vocal cords in “The Light in the Piazza” and “Hairspray” on Broadway.

Glee Mines Two Gold Soundtracks

Posted by Janice Bryant On January - 27 - 2010

It’s quite evident that Glee, Fox’s new comedy, is a huge hit with absolutely no signs that it is slowing down. Recently the show received the Best TV Series- Comedy or Musical for the Golden Globe Award for 2010 from Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

In addition, the show’s music has also hit some very impressive milestones. RIAA has certified Glee: The Music, Volumes 1 and 2 as Gold for having sold over 500,000 units each. Additionally, since May more than 4 million Glee songs have been downloaded from online. Volume 1 debuted on Billboard’s Top 200 chart in the number 4 position. Volume 2 made its debut at number 3. This week the two music volumes continue to be among the top 30 in terms of best selling albums. More copies of the Glee volumes have been sold than offerings from Bon Jovi, R. Kelly, Adam Lambert and Miley Cyrus.

The show Glee has emerged as a sensation of pop culture with critics as well as fans all over the world. It has been praised for its fresh, unique and inventive energy. Even more evidence that the show is a phenomenon that can’t be stopped, it was recently announced by Fox that Glee would return for its second second. Re-runs of Season One will begin Tuesday April 13 on Fox right after American Idol.

Glee’s Jane Lynch Engaged to Girlfriend

Posted by Janice Bryant On January - 26 - 2010

Could Jane Lynch, “Glee” star, be singing a different tune soon, perhaps a wedding march?

According to the Carpetbagger blog of the New York Times, Lynch is engaged to Lara Embry, psychologist and longtime girlfriend. The blog has reported that the pair plans on getting married in May.

However, Lynch’s manager is reporting that currently Jane is in a relationship, but that there was no news to report related to her relationship.

News of an upcoming wedding is just one more thing for the star from “Glee” to celebrate. On the show she plays an overbearing Sue Sylvester. She was recently nominated for a Golden Globe and the Screen Actors Guild Award for outstanding ensemble performance in a comedy. Recently Lynch said that news that there would be a second season for the hit show was great news for her frame of mind.

Earlier this month Lynch said, it’s a relief psychologically knowing for another year I will get to play this character and do the show and be able to work with all of these people is very thrilling for me. We really are booking. That’s great.

Glee, 30 Rock Come Our Winners at Screen Actors Guild Awards

Posted by Janice Bryant On January - 23 - 2010

The train for Glee made another stop on Saturday night at the SAG awards and picked another passenger up to keep their award from the Golden Globes company. The Glee cast won the award for Actor for best ensemble in a comedy series. These awards are based on peer votes, the Screen Actors Guild membership, so winning wasn’t an easy task considering the casts from The Office, Modern Family, Curb Your Enthusiasm and 30 Rock were nominated as well. It was quite the feather in the little show’s cap. Glee is quite dependent on the sum of their parts instead of relying on one individual or set of individuals for carrying the show. The designated speaker to represent the group was Jane Lynch.

In other news from Glee, this fall Matthew Morrison will be recording his debut album. He said, it will be different. What I would consider the album to be is a classier type of Justin Timberlake album. It will be more plus a big orchestra and some beats also.

There are also several reports out that Jennifer Lopez is in discussions for potentially being the show’s lunch lady.

Other reports are stating that Neil Patrick Harris, star of How I Met Your Mother and Dr. Horrible, is also in discussions for appearing on the show.

Justin Timberlake was also on the SAG awards red carpet. He stopped by for an interview with E! and dropped a subtle hint that he wanted to appear on Glee as well. You really have to love performers dropping hints about shows they want to appear on while doing red carpet interviews.

Soon Fox will be debuting “Glee” in Japan. The show has some great promos with Akebono Taro, former sumo star, singing “Don’t Stop Believing” acapella style.

Wicked’s Idina Menzel to Guest Star in Glee

Posted by Janice Bryant On January - 21 - 2010

After all the rumors that were swirling around about will she do it or not, Idina Menzel, the star from Broadway, will officially be on Glee’s set to film her role for the upcoming episodes this season.

Lea Michele, Glee star tweeted, I’m on the set with Idina Menzel. She is so lovely and I’m very happy to have her on the show.

Ryan Murphy, creator of Glee, also provided some details for the character of Menzel to Michael Ausiello, resident Gleek for Entertainment Weekly, who shot the originally rumor down of Menzel playing the biological mother of Rachel, Michele’s character.

Murphy told Entertainment Weekly that he wasn’t going to do that. Her part was written as kind of Faye Dunaway in Network. She will be playing Vocal Adrenaline’s female coach. That is who she will be playing.

Menzel will appear during the first episode after the show returns to the air on April 13 as well as the season finale when the kids are participating with New Directions in their regional showdown.

Kristin Chenoweth, Menzel’s co-star in Wicked, appeared in an earlier episode this season. She sang a cover of “Alone” the hit from Heart, along with Matthew Morrison.

Glee Cast Set to Tour This Summer

Posted by Janice Bryant On January - 20 - 2010

Is the Glee tour coming to a city that’s near you?

The creator of the Golden Globe award winning television series, Ryan Murphy, has confirmed that Glee’s cast will go on tour this summer.

Murphy, speaking to television critics visiting Glee’s set in Los Angeles said, we will do a tour. Yes, we are touring.

I really can’t say anything more right now. However in the next few weeks there will be an announcement about dates and the places where we’ll be touring.

They will be very busy beavers, Murphy added, pointing to the cast. In April we will finish shooting. Then we will be doing a very select kind of small tour this summer.

Gleeing will be finishing its first season with a nine new episode run beginning April 13 on FOX. The second season for the show has been ordered already.

In addition, Murphy confirmed that he had plans for a meeting with Jennifer Lopez so they could talk about her possibly making a guest appearance on Glee.

Murphy said, she is a Glee fan, and I’m one of her fans. We will have dinner so we can discuss it. I would love to get her to play some great cafeteria lady and have Kurt (played by Chris Colfer), make her over into a sensation like Susan Boyle or something.

Neil Patrick Harris Closing on a Stellar Glee Guest Slot

Posted by Janice Bryant On January - 18 - 2010

Reports are that Neil Patrick Harris has narrowed in on a deal for appearing in a May sweeps episode of Glee being directed by Joss Whedon, his director from Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog.

Harris reportedly does want to be on the show and Ryan Murphy, creator of Glee, definitely wants him. A role is being created especially for the scene stealer of How I Met Your Mother. The role does include some song and dance. The gig, in fact, would reunited Harris with Zachary Woodlee, choreographer for the musical number for the recent 100th episode of How I Met Your Mother, as well as with Whedon.

One potential snag- there always seems to have to be one- is CBS will need to approve the appearance of their MVP on the breakout FOX hit. However Glee and How I Met Your Mother are both 20th Century Fox produced, so on their end there is no conflict.

Glee Cleans Up at the Golden Globes

Posted by Janice Bryant On January - 17 - 2010

“Glee,” the first year show, won top television honors on January 17 during the Golden Globe Awards ceremony. The series took home the best musical or comedy television series award over other veteran shows like Entourage,” “30 Rock,” and “The Office.”

Ryan Murphy, creator of the show said in his acceptance speech with the cast celebrating behind him, thank you to Barbra Streisand and the Hollywood Foreign Press. We want to thank all of the amazing people who thought that a musical really would work for prime time television.

Although “Glee” did win the biggest award for its category, they did lose three awards that cast members had been nominated for. Leah Michele lost to Toni Colette of “The United States of Tara,” for best actress in a musical or comedy series. Jane Lynch lost to Chloe Sevigny from “Big Love” for best supporting actress. Matthew Morrison, who signed a recording deal earlier this week with Mercury Records, was beaten by Alec Baldwin from “30 Rock” for best actor.

The singers Cher and Christina Aguilera were presenters for best original song in a motion picture award. Ryan Bingham and T Bone Burnett won for “The Weary Kind,” for the movie “Crazy Heart.” Bingham and Burnett won over fellow nominees U2 for “Winter” from the movie “Brothers” as well as Paul McCartney for his song “I Want to Come Home,” for the movie “Everybody’s Fine.”

However, McCartney had his moment up at the podium. The former Beatle was a presenter for the best animated motion picture award. He joked, I’m Paul McCartney. I’m also known as the “Rock Band” guy.

Julia Roberts, presenter for best drama, bragged about how she had shared a table with McCartney. If you want to get lots of attention, just sit next to McCartney. In all my life I have never had this many texts.

Karen O, front woman for Yeah Yeah Yeahs, received a nomination for the award best original score in a motion picture along with Carter Burwell. However, Michael Giacchino won the award for his “Up” score.

In terms of the top acting and film categories for the Golden Globes, “Avatar,” current best grossing movie, won for best drama. “The Hangover,” the summer blockbuster, “ won for best comedy or musical. Jeff Bridges won best actor for his role in “Crazy Heart” and Sandra Bullock won best actress for her role in “The Blind Side.” The Golden Globe’s 67th annual awards show was hosted by Ricky Gervais, the comedian, and broadcast live from Beverly Hills, California on NBC.
